The Road to Publication: Part Ten

[This is part 10 of a summary of Spookygirl’s journey toward publication. Use the Progress tag to access all related entries.]

I promised a biggie, didn't I? How's this?

ARCs have landed! Or galleys, or proofs, or whatever you prefer to call them. I AM HOLDING MY BOOK IN MY HANDS. It's really, really gorgeous in person; I couldn't be more pleased.

When I picked up the package from the post office, I had to sit in my car in the parking lot for a good ten minutes before I stopped shaking enough to drive. I only got a few copies, but when we're a little closer to the release date, I'm hoping to hold a giveaway for one. Keep an eye out!

You know, it was just last April that I blogged about winning an ARC of Small Persons with Wings. I never imagined that, a year later, I'd take a similar photo holding my very own book.

  1. Wow, congratulations! That must be an amazing feeling. To have all your hard word and years of struggle finally pay off and hold the end results...in your own hands. Awesome.

Me...I'd be too afraid to even open it or even glance through the pages, for fear (however irrational) of spotting a typo.

So you get the ARC in early April...but the release date isn't until August. A four month lead time up to 1st print run and distribution--is that pretty standard?

    1. Thank you! It's a wonderful feeling. I've spent a lot of time just staring at my little pile of ARCs.

At this stage typos can still be caught and corrected. The proof is pretty much the last chance to fix things before the book goes to print. I've only caught one tiny error, though -- everything's in great shape.

I have no idea whether this is standard. I think we're still running on a slightly tighter schedule than usual for the industry.
