It's contest time! Spookygirl's Violet wants to know what spooks you.
Two winners will be chosen at random. The first will receive one of the Spookygirl ARCs sent to me by Penguin/Dutton. The second will receive that Spookygirl ARC I bought on eBay. Both copies will be autographed; I'll be happy to personalize the autographs if the winners request it. I'll also send both winners some of the spooky swag I'm currently designing. (Swag will ship separately because some of it is still being printed.)
There are four ways to enter. Each task counts as one entry, so if you do all four, you'll be entered four times. (You can only win once, though!) I'll ship the ARCs anywhere in the world, so international entries are more than welcome!
Here are the ways to enter:
-Reply to this post and mention something that spooks you. Scary novel, horror movie, phobia -- anything goes! (My personal Big Crazy Fear is clowns. CLOWNS, MAN.)
-Mention the contest on your own blog with a link back to this post. Then leave a comment here with a link to your post so I can keep track of who's done this.
-Like Spookygirl: Paranormal Investigator on Facebook and share the status update about the contest on your own wall.
-Follow me on Twitter and retweet my tweet about the contest (or link to this post in one of your own tweets and include the hashtag #Spookygirl).
That's it! The contest will run through August 1, and I'll announce the winners on August 2.
Horror movies! I can't watch them to save my life. Rosemary's Baby is about as scary as I can get before I have to turn the movie off and do something else (like watch MLP:FiM ;P) so I won't have nightmares. *shudders*
ReplyDeleteGood luck with the contest! I've already followed you everywhere and I'll be sharing and writing a note about it in today's post :)
It's been forever since I last saw Rosemary's Baby -- I should rewatch.
DeleteAnd thank you! :D
Ready for a weird one? Butterflies.
ReplyDeleteI am TERRIFIED of them, I have been since I went to the butterfly conservatory in Niagara Falls when I was little. I have this memory of like, four coming at me at once, and ever since then I can't be around them. I think it's the wings. Well, no, it's the wings for sure. I hate the way they flutter and the way you can never tell when they're going to land. Moths are almost worse. Who the hell goes "hm, yes, we've done alright with butterflies. Now... LET'S GIVE THEM *FUR*" NO. NO, THAT IS A MISTAKE.
I live in Canada, so every year grade seven classes from all over Ontario do an overnight trip to Niagara Falls. You can guess where we ended up going. I tried to tell my teachers that I actually just wouldn't be able to go into the conservatory, I wouldn't be able to handle it, but they thought I was looking for attention or exaggerating.
Yeah, I screamed so loud people thought I was being attacked, and I had to be escorted out through a back exit.
So there we go, my totally weird phobia.
Now that's one I haven't heard before! Good thing I never posted pics of the luna moth that landed on me last month, or of the caterpillars I've been fostering lately...
DeleteI think the thing that spooks me out the most is mirrors in the dark. I flat out REFUSE to look at them in the dark. I think it stems from doing Bloody Mary at my dance school overnights, but I think even before that I was leery about mirrors in the dark. I have a full length mirror that sits at the top of the stairs in my bedroom, and it freaks me out every time I walk past it in the dark...but yet I never move it.
ReplyDeleteI don't blame you -- mirrors *are* kind of freaky in the dark. Honestly, I've never had the guts to try Bloody Mary.
DeleteOMG yes! I refused to have mirrors in my room until I went to college and had no say in the giant mirror in the dorm room!
DeleteOne of the things that spooks me is the movie Event Horizon. First of all, it takes place in deep space which freaks me out because there is NO ONE to help you when stuff goes bad. Secondly, a space ship is killing people. Terrifying!
ReplyDeleteI've never seen that one! I'll have to Netflix it sometime.
DeleteNeedles. Oh gracious. A peach at the doctor's I am not. :P Heaven help them if they need to draw blood and don't hit a vein so instead decide to go 'fishing about' until they do. Cannot handle.
ReplyDeleteBest of luck with the contest! <3
As the person with the worst, hardest-to-find veins on the planet, I don't blame you at all on that one!
DeleteThank you! :D
Um… are all “family, relatives and/or relations of any kind” excluded? ;)
ReplyDeleteWell, even if they are, if you want spooky…
There once was a young woman who had a very imaginative love affair with a certain handsome, older gentleman. (Translation - they had never met except in her midnight fantasies.)
On one occasion, this young lady conjured a sweet story about a shared dance between the two. Closing her eyes, she carefully described the room where their fairly innocent exchange took place. Of note was the leather couch she was sitting upon, the warm, wood floors and the wall to wall, floor to ceiling windows that graced the room.
What’s so spooky about that, you ask?
Well, that little tale was written April 16, 2007, to be exact. And yet, only this morning, there came to her attention a photograph, taken quite recently, mind you, of her secret lover… sitting upon the very couch, in the very room she had so sweetly transcribed from her dream. Yes, the floors are the same, warm wood.
These two have never met. She has never seen the inside of his home, either in photographs, or reality.
And this was not the first time a scene from her mind has appeared in a photograph, long after she had conjured it, particularly with/about him.
“Is that weird? Or what?...”
Uh, oh, I mean, is that not spooky?
If anyone wants to read the story… beg. ;) I may repost it sometime. It’s really not that great except to fans. To see the photograph… well, for that one, you’ll just have to dig on your own.
P.S. I did receive your e-mail, Sis and hope to reply soon. *hugs*
~me
Hee! That *is* spooky, Sis. But it's the good kind of spooky. :)
DeleteOh, this is such a fun question for summer! <3 You know, summer is never completed without ghost story in humid nights during sleepovers... ;)
ReplyDeleteOh well, since I won't write loooong horror story this time, I think I'll just have to go with things that spook me. I have fear of dark streets, especially when there are scary-looking people hanging around. I always feel like they would catch me and do bad things to me. I'm such a paranoid so walking home alone when it's dark always scare me. LOL, I ruuuuun to my house as if my life on stake when I come home at night! :p I might have made a new olympic record because of my running. :p
Well, that's my story. Sorry if it bores you, and THANK YOU so much for making this international! <3 You rock, Jil! x)
Thanks for joining in, Hilda! I agree -- summer's a great time for spookiness.
DeleteAnd I agree about dark streets or walking at night. All those shadows can really put your imagination in overdrive.
Just about everything spooks me. Horror movies, the dark, mirrors, scary stories, BEES. I read too much "creepypasta" online, then end up being afraid to go downstairs even if the lights are on. I'm scared to go past our back door because the backyard is so dark... you never know what could be lurking in the shadows!
ReplyDeleteI`m really afraid of spiders. My sister once told me that a person yearly eats 12 spiders in their sleep, so counting my age, I`ve eaten about 182 with something spiders. Just thinking about it now, I have goosebumps all over my skin O_o
ReplyDeleteThank you for this giveaway! :)
Hi Jill!
ReplyDeleteI'm actually super excited about your novel coming out! I actually just finished writing my novel that has a few similar aspects and I'd love to see your vision here. I mean, that is why I started writing mine in the first place. There needed to be more kick-ass women out there hunting things and not scared of the supernatural.
I absolutely love horror anything, so it's very rare that things scare me. However, there are two exceptions to this.
1. Clowns!! I hate clowns. I still have a shirt that I bought at Hot Topic when I was 13. It said, "Can't Sleep, Clowns Will Eat Me." Which is exactly how I feel about them. I stray away from carnivals for that reason and I don't go anywhere that use clowns as to advertise.
2. Bugs! I'm not talking about seeing one ant and flipping out. I'm talking about being confronted with a room full of bugs, crawling and slithering all over, kind of like Indiana Jones-ish. I've (thankfully) never been in this bug situation, but it still makes my stomach turn thinking about it.
Being that I am super excited about your novel, I have tweeted it and blogged about it. I would be lying if I didn't say that I would love to win a copy! If I do, I promise to read it and review it! :) Thank you for the contest no matter who wins!!

I can watch any horror movie without being scared, but the Ring movies I find very creepy. I think the storyline is just great, but they are definitely creepy movies.
ReplyDeleteCentipedes..I despise them, they move too quick and freak me out

Hey there! Thanks for the giveaway! I've been excited to read Spookygirl ever since ABNA 2011... Anyway, I followed you on Twitter and retweeted (@Heather_Riffle)... Still I wanted to share what spooks me....
ReplyDeleteOkay, two things. If we're talking about reality, I'm a bit of an arachnophobe... Yep. But if we're talkin' things that spook me even though I know they don't exist? Zombies. I actually wrote a blog post about their spook factor last Halloween. :)
Again, thanks for the giveaway!
Oh! And I love Event Horizon! ;)
I'm TERRIFIED of leeches. However, this isn't a phobia because I'm pretty sure that a fear of something that will suck your blood is a legitimate fear. Also, leeches are freaking scary. *shudders*
ReplyDeleteI live a 5-10 minute walk to a lake and can't swim in it because there might be leeches in there.
I'm terrified of Casper. Ah, it is funny. I couldn't watch that movie for all of my childhood. His three uncles, Fatso, Stinky, and Stretch used to make me have nightmares!!
